BEM

Broadband Electro-Magnetics

BEM™ is a proven, global technology with several competitive NDT advantages. Its accuracy for mapping corrosion and identifying discrete or localised flaws in metallic infrastructure such as pipelines, storage tanks, ship hulls, to name a few, has been independently tested.

It is also a truly non-destructive method, as it does not require the removal of linings or coatings prior to inspections eliminating the need for refurbishment.  Rock Solid Group has BEM™ tools for both internal and external scanning for pipes of both small and large diameter allowing for 100% surface coverage if required.

YOU CAN ENGAGE OUR FULL RANGE OF SPECIALIST SERVICES, RENT EQUIPMENT AND COLLECT THE FIELD DATA YOURSELF OR EVEN BECOME AN ACCREDITED LICENSEE.  CERTIFIED TRAINING IS AVALIABLE.

BEM™ ADVANTAGES

BEM™ is available in different configurations, like the simple Hand Scanning Kit (HSK) to the more complex remotely operated submersible devices – applicable to a comprehensive range of diameters and infrastructure shapes.  A variety of BEM™ tools have been developed to meet customer needs and support field operations, offering time-saving benefits and ease of use.

BE BEM™ SURE!

Pipe failures occur on a daily basis in major cities around the world (PHSMA - 2021) as aged infrastructure approaches the end of its design life.  Utilities around the world with asset management responsibilities have a growing awareness of the need to BEM™ before the Burst!

OUR TECHNOLOGY SCALES FROM A SINGLE ISOLATED SENSOR TO HUNDREDS OF COMBINED SENSORS ALL FIRING SIMULTANEOUSLY.

There are numerous benefits and advantages of

BEM™ OVER OTHER TECHNOLOGIES

for measuring wall condition.

  • BEM™ calibration is not necessarily required prior to commencing scanning at each site location. It utilises existing databases that are an integral part of the proprietary MetCon© or MetConNG© software for a number of pipe materials including but not limited to Mild Steel, Ductile Iron and Cast Iron.

  • BEM™ technology works by emitting a discrete broadband electro-magnetic signal from one or from hundreds of simultaneously fired sensors, which interacts with other near neighbour sensors as well as the target material be it a tank, pipe, or other engineering structure.

  • BEM™ penetrates wall thicknesses of up to 25mm / 1-inch for mild steel and even greater for other pipe materials, all based on the sensor size and configuration selected.

  • BEM™ can provide up to 100% surface coverage ofyour asset in either 50mm (2-inch), 25mm (1-inch), and as fine as 12mm (0.5-inch) resolution.

  • BEM™ probes are waterproof for underwater and marine applications, and can be used on both hot and cold surfaces.

  • BEM™ delivers a continuous contour plot of wall thickness over the scanned area. These contours are not simple interpolations between isolated data points but the result of a holistic plot based on interactive signals recorded from scans over large surface areas.

  • BEM™ has the capability to provide wall thickness measurements of up to accuracy of +/-1mm / 0.04-inch.

  • BEM™ is not limited by the diameter of the pipe or area of the surface requiring analysis. Other shapes & features, including weld joints, elbows and tees, can also be scanned.

  • BEM™ scanning through thick coatings or linings can be undertaken, including through materials such as paint, coal tar, CFC, SIP, CIP and cement mortar.

  • BEM™ is not frequency-dependent, so can be used in environments with stray currents. On site analysis of captured data allows the selection of increased suppression eliminating stray current fields from contaminating recorded data.

  • BEM™ post-survey analysis allows for position discrimination of indications (internal or external) as well as determining the severity of sub-sensor sized flaws.

HSK

  • This device comes with a range of sensor and antennae sizes and can be applied to scanning metallic infrastructure, including those with thick coatings or linings. when applied externally to pipe infrastructure the network can remaining online, requiring little to no surface preparation. It enables both internal and external scanning with no infrastructure shape or diameter limitations. If you can fit in you can scan it using the HSK. Designed for ease of use, it can be operated by a single person.

C-316

  • The C-316 allows you to connect up to 16 antennae and scan with the touch of a button. It features built-in multiplexing and integrates with the Flexible Array Scanning Tool (FAST), which is optimized for external or internal pipeline scanning. The system includes easy ‘click’ cables and connectors, supports any diameter or shape, and offers both broad-brush or 100% surface coverage. It is user-friendly and cost-effective.

nCOR

  • Our latest addition, the nCOR system can drive thousands of sensors simultaneously, significantly reducing time spent on site. With multiple scanning modes available, the system can detect flaws smaller than the sensor size and determine whether they are internal or external. It supports any diameter or shape, provides up to 100% surface coverage, and is easy to use.

e-FAST

  • This tool enables rapid scanning of the full or partial pipe circumference and can be pre-configured for any specific pipe diameter. It maintains a fixed position on the pipe surface, enhancing data positioning and quality while reducing manual labour. This significantly shortens scanning time and boosts productivity. It can also be used alongside manual BEM™ 'hand-scanning' technique. Capable of scanning through thick coatings (25mm+), such as cement or tar, its wall-penetrating signal can identify internal or external corrosion or flaw inclusions within the pipe wall, scanning typically performed while the pipe remains in service.

i-FAST

  • The i-FAST enables rapid internal scanning of the full or partial pipe circumference of diameters allowing operator access. Like the e-FAST, it maintains a fixed position on the pipe surface to enhance data quality and positioning, reduce manual labour, and significantly decrease scanning time—greatly boosting productivity. It can be used in conjunction with manual BEM™ 'hand-scanning' techniques. Capable of scanning through thick linings (25mm+), such as cement or tar, its wall-penetrating signal can identify internal or external corrosion or flaw inclusions within the pipe wall.

CAP

  • This tool is ideal for the assessment of external and/or internal corrosion along the crown of any pipe. Pipes of any diameter can be scanned with little excavation required. Where the pipe is exposed in a valve chamber no excavation is required at all. Capable of wall assessment through thick coating (more than 25mm), and the pipe can remain on-line for the time of scanning. This tool detects inner and outer corrosion.

CAT

  • This tool can be used for fast and effective condition audit screening, and is designed to be connected to extension poles for extend reach requiring no operator entry into any excavation. If If the pipe is within arm’s reach the CAT can be used like a stethoscope particularly when scanning internally within a large diameter pipe. The CAT generates virtual coupons of exposed infrastructure. If the pipe is buried minimal surface disruption is required with access typically provided with the aid of a vacuum excavated pothole. Possible to scan through thick and uneven coatings or linings, and through surface rust or graphitic corrosion. The CAT can be operated by a single person reducing costs & providing rapid results.
